Fred Upton represented SW Michigan for 36 years in the US House, retiring in 2023. Always viewed as an influential representative, he dedicated himself to constituent service and as a bipartisan problem solver. During his tenure he served on the Small Business, Transportation, Education, and Super Committees. He was the Vice-Chair of the Joint Economic Committee and chaired the powerful Energy & Commerce Committee from 2011-2017 while passing some 350 bills in the House of which more than 200 were enacted by President Obama. Hailed as the most important pieced of legislation enacted in 2016; HR 6, the 21st Century Cures legislation expedited the approvals of drugs/devices coupled with $45b in additional health research funds. Four years later it allowed the FDA to approve the COVID vaccine 6-8 months earlier saving hundreds of thousands of lives. As a co-chair of the bipartisan auto-caucus, Upton helped lead the effort with John Dingell and Dave Camp on the auto rescue plan saving the domestic auto industry from bankruptcy. He also served as a Vice-Chair of the bipartisan Problem Solver’s Caucus and still active in the No Label’s organization. Prior to his tenure in the House, Upton served in the Reagan White House ending up in charge of the OMB Legislative Affairs office. Fred and Amey have been happily married since 1983 and have 2 children and 4 grandchildren. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Upton now serves on the boards of the Argonne Natl Lab, the Bipartisan Commission on Biodefense, and the Former Members of Congress.
