Local Gov Organizations to Host Webinar with DHHS on Opioid Settlement Uses and Best Practices

MAC, in partnership with MML, MTA, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Attorney General will be hosting a webinar on the National Opioid Settlement. The webinar will be held on Wed. March 2, 3:00-4:00PM.

State, county, and local governments are slated to receive funds from the national opioid settlement soon, and this webinar will provide an opportunity for local elected officials to learn more about the timeline and eligible uses of funds, as well as offer insights into best practices from state partners.

DEBRA A. PINALS, M.D. serves as the Medical Director of Behavioral Health and Forensic Programs for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and is the Director of the Program in Psychiatry, Law, & Ethics and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School and Clinical Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan Law School. She has worked in outpatient, inpatient settings, forensic and correctional facilities, emergency rooms, and court clinics. She is Board Certified in Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, and Addiction Medicine. During her career, she has been a clinical policy advisor related to the opioid crisis and has consulted on complex systems cases for people with mental illness, substance use disorder, and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities who are receiving treatment or support in various places- such as in community, court, carceral, forensic and state hospital settings. She teaches and publishes extensively and has led and consulted on numerous federal grants including those related to opioids, juvenile justice, and behavioral health and justice partnerships.

Matt Walker is an Assistant Attorney General in the Corporate Oversight Division. Matt works on Michigan’s opioid litigation and serves as the Attorney General’s designee on Governor Whitmer’s Opioid Task Force. Prior to working in the Attorney General’s Office, Matt worked for State Court Administrative Office, the 30th Circuit Court, and private practice. Matt received his B.A. and J.D. from Michigan State University.
