House Tax Policy Considers Legislation to Help Collect Internet Sales Tax

This morning the House Tax Policy Committee took testimony on House Bills 4202 and 4203, bills that create a state version of “marketplace fairness”. There is currently federal legislation pending on marketplace fairness to allow states to collect sales tax on online purchases. The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on this legislation on May 6.

These bills seek to create a nexus to businesses who are operating in Michigan in order to collect sales tax on the purchases from those businesses.

The League is supportive of this legislation as we are of the federal Marketplace Fairness Act. The committee chair indicated that the committee may vote on these bills in the coming weeks.
